Dr. Lucas was born in Montgomery, Alabama and grew up in the small town of Eclectic, Alabama near Lake Martin. He completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He continued his undergraduate honors biomedical research at UAB and pursued a dual degree (DMD/PhD) in Dentistry and Materials Engineering. He graduated in 2015 from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with his dental degree (DMD) and his doctorate (PhD) in Materials Engineering.

After graduation, Dr. Lucas practiced general dentistry in Auburn, Alabama for four years before returning to UAB in Birmingham to begin his 24-month residency specializing in endodontics (root canals). Upon completing his formal training in Endodontics, he practiced as a root canal specialist in Peachtree City/Fayetteville, Georgia for three years, and then briefly in Asheville, North Carolina, until Hurricane Helene displaced him to Knoxville in November of 2024.

Dr. Lucas is a member of the American Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, and the American Association of Endodontists. He is board-eligible and currently working on the final stage of becoming board-certified in the field of Endodontics—a three-step process and the highest voluntary certification that can be achieved.

Dr. Lucas is married to his beautiful wife, Laura, and they have five daughters: Abby, Ella, Charlee, Quinnley, and Willa. He enjoys spending time with his children and looks forward to their weekly date night outings. Dr. Lucas also enjoys traveling, off-roading in his Jeep, and discovering the best “hole-in-the-wall” food spots.

Dr. Bill Powell
Retired

Dr. Bill Powell founded Knoxville Endodontics in 1975 after spending three years with a group endodontic practice that eventually dissolved. His solo practice grew successfully, and in 1987, he welcomed his first associate and partner, Dr. Frank Balaban. Together, they continued to expand Knoxville Endodontics, adding Dr. Wallin Myers in 2002 and Dr. Ben Scott in 2008. The practice has continued to flourish since then. Now retired from seeing patients, Dr. Powell is often still “in office” as a lifelong member of the team at Knoxville Endodontics.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Powell has been actively involved in organized dentistry and dental education. He has held several leadership positions, including President of the Tennessee Dental Association and Foundation Vice President of the American Dental Association. He has served as a Trustee and Board Director of the American Association of Endodontists and is an Officer of its Foundation. Dr. Powell has also served on the Board of the Dental Lifeline Network nationally and acts as Chair of the Tennessee Affiliate. Additionally, he has served as President of the Southern Endodontic Study Group and the Tennessee Association of Endodontists.

Since the late 1970s, Dr. Powell has been a member of the Advisory Committee for the General Practice Residency in Dentistry at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where he teaches Endodontics as a Clinical Associate Professor. He is also an Assistant Professor in Endodontics at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis, where he has served as President of the Alumni Board. Dr. Powell has lectured both nationally and internationally and has been a guest speaker at numerous endodontic departments across dental schools. He continues to mentor pre-dental candidates as well as current and future endodontists.

Dr. Powell’s community involvement spans 38 years with the Rotary Club of Knoxville. He is a board member of the Knoxville Quarterback Club and serves as Chair of the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. He is also an Honorary Member of The University of Tennessee Letterman’s Club. Dr. Powell and his wife, Linda, have two grown children and three grandchildren, and they are active members of Bearden United Methodist Church.
