A Brief History of Maryville

Maryville has deep roots in the earliest chapters of Tennessee history. The town was formally established on July 11, 1795, through an act of the General Assembly of the Territory South of the Ohio River. It was named in honor of Mary Grainger Blount, wife of territorial governor William Blount. Settlement of the area began in 1785, mainly with Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who moved westward from Virginia and North Carolina, drawn by fertile land, ample water, and abundant timber resources. 

One of Maryville’s most famous early residents was Sam Houston, future hero of the Texas Revolution and first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston moved to Blount County with his family from Virginia in 1807, and in 1812 he taught school in a one-room schoolhouse that is now preserved as a state historic site near Maryville. 

Maryville College, established in 1819 as the Southern and Western Theological Seminary, became one of the first southern schools to open its doors to Native Americans, African Americans, and women. This spirit of inclusion and forward thinking has long defined the character of the community. As industry arrived at the turn of the century, Maryville boomed as a rail junction, leaving behind landmarks like the Blount County Courthouse, a Classical Revival design completed in 1906.
